What is Kiteboarding?

There is a sport that is like surfing, wakeboarding, and flying all at once.  If you’ve ever been to Pismo Beach on a windy day, you will see over two dozen kiteboarders in the water or doing tricks high above it.  Most of these riders are ordinary people that are simply addicted to this amazing extreme sport called kiteboarding.

Kiteboarding uses the wind to combine the aspects of surfing, snowboarding, wakeboarding, and windsurfing into one extreme ocean sport.  The kite, anywhere from 6-20 square meters, powers the rider through the water.  The kite will have either 4 or 5 lines up to 27 meters long that connect to a control bar, which the rider pushes and pulls to control the kite in any direction.  The bar hooks into the rider’s harness, which is most often worn around the waist. A board similar to a wakeboard or surfboard enables the rider to fly over the water. Check out our kites, boards, and harnesses here

We carry Naish, DaKine, Slingshot, Neil Pryde, Caution, NPX, Starboard, Creatures of Leasure, Ocean and Earth, Werner, Garmin, AzHiAzIaM, MBS, and much more.

Pismo Beach Kiteboarding

Welcome to Pismo Beach Kiteboarding

Kiteboarding is an amazing sport that transfers the energy from wind to your kite. The sport is not limited to the water but can be done on land, either solid ground or snow. The possibilities are endless, with many styles, locations, and all the latest gear.

With kiteboarding being a crossover sport for skateboarders, surfers, snowboarders/skiers, and wakeboarders there are many styles of kiteboarding. The many styles are: wakestyle, freestyle, waveriding, landboarding, and snowkiting. Wakestyle describes high powered moves in which the kite can simulate the pull of a boat. With Freestyle the goal is big air jumps, spins, and gouging carves. Waveriding is pure waveriding with kite power, so you'll need a surfboard built for kiteboarding. Landboarding is mountainboarding using the kite as your power source. Snowkiting is amazing using a kite to pull you up a mountain, carve down a mountain, or even jump off a mountain.

At Pismo Beach you can experience wakestyle, freestyle, waveriding, and landboarding. In between Pismo Beach's rolling waves is flat butter water, the perfect condition for all wakestyle tricks. With high windspeeds reaching up to 30kts and some days 40kts, huge jumps and hangtime is easily accessible. Some days we get huge waves but every day there is always some wave to destroy at Pismo Beach. If the wind is light, the tide is low, and the beach isn't crowded, landboarding is the perfect escape.

If you are new to kiteboarding, please take a lesson; this sport is extreme and requires professional instruction. You will also receive a discount off your first equipment purchase if you complete a full day lesson with us. Please feel free to contact us if you have questions about lessons, conditions, equipment, and general information.

Pismo Beach Kiteboarding

Pismo Beach is California's premier kiteboarding location. Pismo Beach is a sandy beach that extends 8 miles south through Grover Beach and Oceano Dunes. The waves range from 2ft to 15ft. They are rolling waves due to the gradual slope on the ocean floor. The further you go out the bigger the waves are. Our windy months are April - August. A typical windy day is about 20-30 mph winds from the NNW, which creates epic side-on kiteboarding conditions.
